For zero-distance reading, the Cultural Bureau of Zhongshi takes a multi-pronged approach. The municipal library delivers books to the lives of citizens through mobile book carts and reading centers. (Picture: provided by Zhongshi government)

To allow different ethnic groups to enjoy reading services nearby, the Taichung Municipal Library set up a reading corner at the Aboriginal Culture and Health Station in Taichung City this year, providing picture books, magazines and other books. Among them, the reading corner at Fengguang Church in Tanzi District was well received by the public. Thank you for being considerate. The Cultural Affairs Bureau stated that to encourage reading, Zhongshitu took the initiative to deliver books to the lives of citizens through mobile library carts and reading centers.

Chen Jiajun, director of Taichung City Cultural Bureau, said that reading is no longer far away, and the whole city is a library for citizens! Since Mayor Lu Xiuyan took office, she has been committed to promoting reading equality and encouraging reading culture. Zhongshitu took the initiative to bring books to schools, rural areas, dormitories for migrant workers, etc. Employment service stations, long-term care institutions, correctional units and other bases hope to send books to the lives of citizens and let the seeds of reading germinate everywhere in the city.

Zhongshitu said that the cultural and health stations currently in contact with the trial include the Taichung Metropolitan Aboriginal Family Service and Community Humanistic Care Association, the Taichung Indigenous Holistic Care Service Association, the Taichung Christian Forward Association, and the Taiwan Christian Foundation Fengguang Presbyterian Church and Taichung Aboriginal Culture, Education and Sports Development Association will continue to look for suitable reading sites in the future.

Zhongshitu pointed out that the “Mountains and Seas” mobile library cart is a good partner to promote reading in rural areas. There are currently 7 mobile library carts that regularly visit schools and communities that lack reading resources, even as far as Lishan. 2,000 service activities, combined with storytelling and e-book experience, are deeply loved by many rural children; Shigang Library will recruit enthusiastic volunteers on June 11 and 12 to organize groups to Lishan Elementary and Middle School and Pingguo Telling stories to schoolchildren, and cooperating with the Lishan Hotel “Dream Study on the Other Side of the Mountain” to promote reading activities.

Zhongshi Tushuo will continue to strive to cross the boundaries of reading, let the fragrance of books spread everywhere in the city, and make reading a part of citizens’ lives; the 2023 “Every Family Has a Small Study Room” is open for submissions until May 31, and the public is welcome to participate. Various reading promotion activities such as lectures, themed book fairs, storytelling, etc. are ongoing.
