(Central News Agency reporter Yang Sirui, Tainan, 24th) Due to factors such as reduced sand supply and wave erosion, Tainan’s Qigu Lagoon has gradually retreated to the landside, posing a threat to the oyster farming industry. The city government has invested more than 100 million yuan since 108 Fund restoration to improve the terrestrialization of the lagoon and sandbank erosion.

Today’s press release from the Tainan City Government’s Water Conservancy Bureau pointed out that Qigu Lagoon is a water area surrounded by sandbars and land coasts. The sandbars block waves in the outer sea. The wind and waves in the lagoon are relatively calm. Affected by the tidal cycle, it has become a good place for species to grow. Fishermen take advantage of the environment. Oyster farming is an important oyster farming area in Taiwan.

The Water Conservancy Bureau pointed out that under the multiple influences of blocked sand supply and typhoon wave erosion, the sandbar offshore Qigu Lagoon gradually retreated toward the landside, and larger waves washed over the sandbar and washed surface sand into the lagoon, resulting in the landization of the lagoon. trend, posing a threat to the oyster farming industry.

The Water Conservancy Bureau pointed out that after Tainan Mayor Huang Weizhe took office in 2018, he immediately used the city’s second reserve fund of NT$23 million to dredge the Qigu Lagoon channel, clearing the channel for about 1 km. A total of NT$132.78 million has been invested in 2012. With the Yuan Coast Restoration Fund, 400,000 cubic meters of earth were dredged and siltation was restored, and the sandbar area was restored to 24 hectares, effectively improving the siltation of the lagoon and the erosion of the sandbar.

The Water Conservancy Bureau stated that it will continue to promote the coastal restoration of Qigu Lagoon this year, with an investment of 12 million yuan in the project. The lagoon dredging and sandbar restoration will be carried out through construction methods such as sand pumping to nourish the beach and sand bags to fix sand.

The Water Conservancy Bureau pointed out that the city government has invested an additional NT$3 million in funding to conduct a study on the overall improvement and adjustment plan for sandbanks and lagoons on Tainan’s coast. It will investigate and analyze the topographic and water depth changes, coastal sand drifting conditions, and coastal changes in the coastal section from Jiangjun Xikou to Zengwen Xikou. The causes of erosion, etc., were proposed through numerical simulation to improve protection construction methods and assess the required funds, and then seek joint cooperation from the central government to complete Tainan’s coastal protection work.

The Water Conservancy Bureau added that it will continue to handle two coastal restoration projects in Qigu Lagoon and Qingshan Port Sandbank this year. The contract has been successfully awarded and started in March. It is expected to be completed before the end of July. It will be possible to dredge 15,000 pieces of silted earth in Qigu Lagoon. cubic meters, the restored sandbank covers an area of 2 hectares and plays a protective role during the typhoon season.
