The Education Bureau of the Tainan City Government has promoted Digital Opportunity Centers (DOCs) since 2005 to make it easier for people in rural areas to obtain digital learning resources and shorten the digital gap between urban and rural areas. This year, new centers were established in Houbi, Xiaying, and Xigang Districts. Currently, there are 12 in total in the city. The number of strongholds ranks first in Taiwan. The Education Bureau jointly unveiled the sign at Houbi Jingliao Elementary School on the 24th. They look forward to setting up a digital opportunity center in the future to offer free digital application courses and market local characteristics.

Tainan City Government Deputy Secretary-General Yin Shixi, Deputy Director of the Education Bureau Wu Guomin, Houbi District Mayor Chen Yuhui and others went to Jingliao Elementary School today to participate in the joint unveiling of the Digital Opportunity Center. Many DOC students’ works and achievements were displayed on-site, as well as rice harvesting and roofing. Chang Community Development Association bowl cakes and other local specialty snacks were available for participating guests, DOC team, teachers and students to enjoy.

Yan Baihong, the principal of Jingliao Elementary School, said that Houbi Digital Opportunity Center combines the energy of Houbi District Office, Jingliao Old Street, Jingliao Tourist Business District and various townships to integrate the unique local people, culture, places, products, scenery, etc. Enrich culture through digital collection and plan special courses suitable for middle-aged and elderly people.

Tainan has set up digital opportunity centers in the administrative districts of Longqi, Jiangjun, Madou, Zuozhen, Liujia, Xinhua, Dongshan, Xuejia, and Yanshui. In order to serve more people, the Education Bureau this year requested from the Ministry of Education to establish the Jingliao Center in Houbi District. Elementary schools, Xiaying Elementary School in Xiaying District, and Xigang Junior High School in Xiangang District have newly established bases to help people in rural areas apply digital services and connect with digital life.

Wu Guomin said that Tainan began to promote digital opportunity centers in 2005. After the first branch was established in 2006, 12 branches have been established so far, mainly providing information courses for middle-aged and elderly people, indigenous peoples, new residents, women and other ethnic groups, using mobile phones, Tablet or computer to learn digital applications.
