The Tainan City Government and the Netherlands Office in Taiwan jointly plan “Taiwan Hometown Song”, which integrates vocal music, string music, puppetry and other diverse techniques. It is produced and presented by the Taiyang Theater Troupe. The Tainan City Cultural Affairs Bureau stated that this commemorative puppet show musical “Taiwan Hometown Song” created by the Taiyang Theater Troupe was carefully planned by Luo Bin, the Dutch artistic director who has lived in Taiwan, and worked with many “Taiwanese” and “foreign” artists. Senior drama and opera artists collaborated cross-culturally, and for the first time they chose to perform an outdoor drama at the historic Chikan Tower (Plominzha City). The plot is easy to understand, and it also describes a moving story of multi-ethnic encounters in an inclusive maritime culture and historical background. It takes you to the historical scene and returns to the international Taiwanese society that was involved in the Age of Discovery 400 years ago.
Cultural Director Hsieh Shi-yuan pointed out that Tainan is the historical frontline where Taiwan meets the world. Today’s Tainan city outline also contains many traces of people from the Netherlands and all over the world who came to Tainan, such as the performance of “Taiwan Hometown Song” The location “Chikan Building” is one of them. The year 2024 coincides with the historical milestone when the Dutch set foot on Tainan and established a stronghold 400 years ago. We hope to create a puppet show musical that combines vocal music, string music, puppetry and other Eastern and Western artistic techniques to perform emotionally, realistically and authentically. A popular story suitable for all ages, it brings audiences cultural excitement and dialogue across time and space, and reflects on the significance and symbolism of 1624 in the development history of Tainan.
The Netherlands Office in Taiwan pointed out that Taiwan-Netherlands relations have a long history. Although the historical position of the Dutch East India Company 400 years ago is more widely discussed in contemporary times, we work together to examine the past, present, and future of our two countries, and integrate the perspective of historical reflection. Focusing on the topics of culture and innovation, we hope that innovation and culture will become the two pillars of future exchanges between Taiwan and the Netherlands, and 2024 will become the “First Year of Innovation and Cultural Exchanges between Taiwan and the Netherlands.”
