Two earthquakes occurred in the eastern waters of Taiwan at 2:11 and 12 am today (25th), with magnitudes of 5.6 and 5.5 respectively. Wu Jianfu said that the epicenter of the two earthquakes that occurred in the early morning was not at the junction of the “Eurasian Plate” and the “Philippine Plate” of the 0403 earthquake. The epicenter of the earthquake that occurred early this morning was located in the Nan’ao Basin. “The Nan’ao Basin is where the Philippine Sea Plate begins. An ocean basin formed by subducting downwards beneath the Eurasian continental plate, where earthquakes often occur. “Therefore, it can be determined that this earthquake has nothing to do with the 0403 earthquake and is an independent event.

In fact, Taiwan is located where two tectonic plates are squeezing each other, so earthquakes occur frequently. In this regard, the Meteorological Administration specifically reminded the public that “earthquakes may occur no matter where in Taiwan” and “be prepared for earthquakes at any time.” The Meteorological Administration also stated that they will continue to pay attention to earthquake activities across Taiwan.

After the earthquake occurred at 2:11 a.m. today, the Central Meteorological Administration issued a significant felt earthquake report No. 339, and pointed out that the epicenter was 73.5 kilometers east of Hualien City Government, in the eastern sea area of ​​​​Taiwan, and the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.6 on the Richter scale. The depth of the earthquake was only 18.5 kilometers, and it was felt in various places. The maximum intensity was magnitude 3 in Hualien and Nantou counties, and magnitude 1 and 2 in other areas.
