(Central News Agency reporter Yu Xiaohan, Taipei, 25th) Two earthquakes with a magnitude of 5 or above occurred off the eastern seaboard early this morning. In response, the Central Meteorological Administration pointed out that these earthquakes were independent events and had nothing to do with the 403 earthquake. Except for a few areas near the epicenter, all other earthquakes had Between levels 1 and 2.

According to the latest information from the Central Meteorological Administration, a magnitude 5.6 earthquake occurred at 2:11 a.m. on the 25th with a depth of 18.5 kilometers. The epicenter was located 73.5 kilometers east of the Hualien County Government (located in the eastern waters of Taiwan). The maximum earthquake magnitude was 3 in Hualien and Nantou counties. .

Another magnitude 5.5 earthquake occurred at 2:12 a.m. with a depth of 24.1 kilometers. The epicenter was 75.7 kilometers east of the Hualien County Government. The maximum magnitude was 2.

Wu Jianfu, director of the Earthquake Forecasting Center of the Central Meteorological Administration, told the media that these earthquakes have nothing to do with the 403 Hualien earthquake and are independent events.

Wu Jianfu said that the epicenter of these earthquakes is in the Nan’ao Basin. The Nan’ao Basin is a basin formed when the Philippine Sea Plate begins to subduct beneath the Eurasian Continent Plate. Earthquakes often occur here.

Wu Jianfu said that the earthquake characteristics in this area are mostly shallow earthquakes with depths between 20 and 40 kilometers, and the focal mechanism is mostly in the form of normal faults.

Wu Jianfu said that although the scale is large and will be felt throughout Taiwan, the epicenter is far away, so the impact of the vibration is small. Except for a few eastern areas closer to the epicenter, such as Hualien, which will have an earthquake magnitude of about 3, the main island The intensity of earthquakes in most areas is between magnitude 1 and 2.

As for why people felt the shaking, Wu Jianfu said that the main reason was that these earthquakes occurred at night and the background environment was quiet. If your home is in the Taipei Basin or in a building, the vibrations will be amplified due to site effect and building effect.

In addition, according to statistics from the Central Meteorological Administration, as of 6:30 this morning, a total of 1,255 aftershocks of the 403 earthquake had occurred, of which 313 were significantly felt and 942 were felt in small areas. (Editor: Li Xizhang) 1130425
