The Energy Administration of the Ministry of Economic Affairs hosted the 60th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Expert Group on New and Renewable Energy Technologies (EGNRET) meeting from April 24 to 25, 2019, at the Chateau de Chine Hotel in Kaohsiung. This conference was held in a physical and video format. A total of 11 APEC economies, APEC forums and expert groups and other expert representatives participated. It aimed at promoting the Asia-Pacific region to achieve the share of renewable energy by 2030 through new and renewable energy policy formulation and technology deployment. The APEC economies participating in this meeting include Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, my country, Thailand, Vietnam, the United States, and Russia, as well as 7 APEC organizations including the Energy Working Group (EWG), EGNRET, and Clean Petroleum Energy Expert Group ( EGCFE), Expert Group on Energy Data and Analysis (EGEDA), Expert Group on Energy Efficiency and Conservation (EGEEC), Asia Pacific Energy Research Center (APERC) and Asia Pacific Sustainable Energy Center (APSEC), as well as non-APEC members including the International Energy Agency ( IEA) and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), with a total of more than 50 participants.

Ong Su-jin, Director-General of the Energy Administration of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, opened the ceremony with a speech on behalf of our country, and stated that in response to global climate change, our country has committed to working together with APEC member economies and actively cooperating closely with the international community to help achieve APEC’s goal of doubling renewable energy. . my country has also announced the vision and goal of the “2050 Net-Zero Emissions Path”, which regards increasing the proportion of renewable energy as one of the key strategies, and gradually moves towards a net-zero sustainable economy focused on green growth.

During the meeting, Chen Chongxian, leader of the Energy Administration of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, shared “my country’s net-zero transformation and renewable energy development”, introducing my country’s current energy situation and 2050 net-zero emission plan, as well as renewable energy goals and key strategies. In addition to continuing to promote solar photovoltaics and offshore wind power In addition to construction, we are also actively developing and planning forward-looking energy technologies such as hydrogen energy and CCS. With the accelerated development of renewable energy, it is estimated that my country’s renewable energy power will account for 60% to 70% by 2050.

Representatives from APEC economies also shared the current status of renewable energy development, policy promotion and technological progress, and actively discussed ways to strengthen the development and capacity building of new and renewable energy technologies in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as the future direction of new and renewable energy technology cooperation among APEC regions. And then achieve the common renewable energy goal as scheduled.

Various economies and APEC-related organizations are also discussing new and renewable energy cooperation issues and forms of cooperation between subsequent APEC expert groups. In addition to continuing to hold joint meetings in the future, member economies are also encouraged to continue to raise relevant issues regarding EGNRET and other expert groups. Planning and conducting seminars will open up more opportunities for cross-group cooperation to work together towards the goal of sustainable energy development, allowing economies to pursue economic development while taking sustainability into account, and promote balanced development in more aspects.
