Study: Young people more likely to get cancer before age 50

A cancer analysis study in 44 countries found that those who get cancer at a young age, which we generally define as people under 50 years old: published in Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology found that people born after 1990 are more likely than People born in 1970 are more “likely to get cancer before the age of 50.” This means that young people are more affected by cancer than previous generations.

10 cancer symptoms to watch out for as physical warning signs

Intensivist Huang Xuan shared how young people can detect early warning symptoms of cancer:

1. Painless lump or swelling

If you find an abnormal lump appearing in a certain part of your body and it gradually gets larger over time, you need to be vigilant.

2. Persistent fever or persistent cough

Especially when coughs are often accompanied by bloodshot eyes, more attention should be paid. While this can be caused by a variety of factors, if a fever persists, especially if you sweat at night, it could be a sign of a blood cancer or a cancer of the lymphatic system. If you have a cough that lasts for more than three weeks, you should see a doctor to feel more at ease.

3. Changes in bowel habits

This includes constipation, diarrhea, or finding blood in the stool or the color becomes black, gray, or red.

4. Abnormal difficulty in urinating

Such as frequent need to urinate, urgency or pain during urination, or even less and less urine.

5. Unprovoked bleeding

This includes vaginal bleeding, bleeding during bowel movements or urination, or bleeding from a cough.

6. Unexplained weight loss

If you suddenly lose more than 5 kilograms of weight without changing your diet or exercise habits, this may be a sign of early cancer.

7. Persistent fatigue

If you feel persistent extreme fatigue that affects your daily life, you should be alert. Feeling tired, especially after resting, may be an early sign of cancer.

8. Skin changes

New moles or changes in size, shape, or color of existing moles should not be ignored. New moles, changes in their shape, size or color, redness, yellowing, itching or peeling of the skin may be warning signs of skin cancer.

9. Persistent pain

If you have persistent pain and no cause can be found, further testing is needed. Especially if the location and intensity of the pain gradually increase, and no other cause can be found, you should be alert to the possibility of cancer.

10. Digestive system problems

For example, long-term heartburn, indigestion, severe diarrhea, worsening appetite, and weight loss as you eat may be early signs of cancer.

Stay alert to detect health problems early

Huang Xuan emphasized that these symptoms may not be caused by cancer, but if these symptoms persist or tend to worsen, it is recommended to seek medical examination as soon as possible. Having regular health checkups and staying alert to any changes in your body can help identify and treat health problems early, thereby increasing the likelihood of successful treatment.

Remember, prevention is better than cure. Maintain a healthy lifestyle, such as: “a balanced diet, moderate exercise, avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, and reducing exposure to known carcinogens.” These are all effective ways to reduce the risk of cancer in young people.
