Microsoft recently released update KB5036980, which will recommend Microsoft Store apps in the Start menu for Windows 11 users. According to Microsoft’s update notes for the public Windows 11 release, the “Recommended” section of the “Start” menu will display Microsoft Store apps from a small select group of developers. These ads are designed to help Windows 11 users discover more apps, but primarily to attract developers to create more Windows apps.

Quickly advance advertising features

Surprisingly, Microsoft started testing these ads just two weeks ago, and it took only a short time for the feature to progress from beta channel to official release. During the initial testing, it was mentioned that Microsoft might decide to discontinue these ads based on user feedback, but two weeks of feedback was apparently not enough to make a decision.

How to disable ads

Fortunately, users can choose to turn off these ads, which Microsoft calls “recommended” ads. If you have installed the latest KB5036980 update, you can go to “Settings” > “Personalization” > “Start” and turn off the switch for “Show recommended tips, app promotions, etc.” While the KB5036980 update is currently optional, Microsoft will push this update to all Windows 11 devices in the coming weeks.

Similar experiments in the past

Microsoft’s move to enable ads in the Windows 11 Start menu continues a similar promotional placement on the Windows 10 lock screen and Start menu. Last year, Microsoft also tested ads in Windows 11’s File Explorer, but the experiment was later stopped and it stated that the test “was not intended for external release.” Hopefully this advertising experiment will be limited to the experimental phase.
