Pixel 7 Pro lags behind other Android flagships, Tensor G2 even loses to Snapdragon 888

Google will officially announce the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro on October 6, and confirm that the new phone is equipped with the next-generation Tensor G2 chip. However, the Pixel 7 Pro benchmark results from the Geekbench database may be disappointing. The second-generation Tensor chip not only fails to keep up with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 used by many current Android flagship models, but is even beaten by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Snapdragon last year. 888 beat.

A developer, Kuba Wojciechowski, shared the Tensor G2 benchmarks through his personal Twitter account, and the results may not be as good as expected, especially when Google’s homemade chips are produced on the improved Samsung 4nm process.

Compared with the Snapdragon 888, the Tensor G2 gets slower single-core and multi-core benchmarks, which means it can’t compete with the Qualcomm chips on many Android flagships this year.

Looking at the Geekbench 5 benchmark, the fastest mobile phone with the Snapdragon 888 is the Lenovo Legion 2 Pro, with single-core and multi-core results of 1115 and 3581, respectively. In comparison, the Tensor G2 only reached 1068 and 3149 under the same conditions, showing the difference between the two chips.

Also, the Pixel 7 Pro uses a different CPU cluster than other Android flagships:

2 Cortex-X1 cores at 2.85GHz.
2 Cortex-A76 cores at 2.35GHz.
Four 1.80GHz Cortex-A55 cores.

With competing products adopting Cortex-X3 cores in the coming months, it’s puzzling why Google insisted on using the older Cortex-X1 on the Tensor G2. However, the raw performance of the phone is not everything, and despite the low score in the benchmark test, if the overall phone is optimized, it can also improve the user experience. In addition, the Pixel 7 Pro may only be tested on the lower clock Tensor G2, and perhaps further improved results can be seen after the official release.
