--

Apple’s flagship smartphone of the year: the iPhone 14 series, will be officially launched in Taiwan today (16th). I wonder if all the fruit fans will get it right away? Since Apple did not officially provide us with a test machine, when the pre-order started, we also directly ordered an iPhone 14 Pro Max 256GB to write out the box and test. If we decide again, we will also have a series of evaluations for reference. In the first article, we will share with you the unboxing, initial impressions, and performance benchmarks of the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

▲ There were many fruit fans waiting outside the Apple Xinyi A13 early this morning.

▲ Almost everyone has an iPhone, and I only saw one person using the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold.

▲ The iPhone 13 Pro Max (left) is packaged with a black background, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max has a white background. The iPhone 13 Pro Max prints the pattern on the back of the phone, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max prints the pattern on the front of the phone. Here is a cold knowledge. Starting with the iPhone X, the patterns printed on the front of each generation of iPhone packaging are staggered. The iPhone X is the front, the iPhone 11 is the back, the iPhone 12 is the front, the iPhone 13 is the back, and the iPhone 14 is the back. front.

iPhone 14 Pro Max vs. iPhone 13 Pro Max

From a purely design perspective, the difference between the iPhone 14 Pro Max and its predecessor, the iPhone 13 Pro Max, is quite small. The biggest difference lies in the color. The main color of the previous generation iPhone 13 Pro Max, Tianfeng Blue, is the most popular; The deep purple of the iPhone 14 Pro Max actually looks quite textured to the naked eye. Its purple is not the bright one, but under the reflection of light, it will reveal more purple tones, which is a pretty color.

If you look closely at the difference in appearance between the two, the iPhone 14 Pro Max has a larger lens and overall camera module size than the iPhone 13 Pro Max due to the larger size of the camera sensor; in addition, the bottom of the camera module is rounded. For the square glass part, the edge of the iPhone 14 Pro Max is made closer to a right angle, while the iPhone 13 Pro Max uses a 2.5D cut edge, which looks rounder. In addition, the position of the SIM card slot on the side of the two models is also different. Although the positions of the buttons and the port are the same, due to the different sizes of the camera modules, the protective case of the iPhone 13 Pro Max cannot be used on the iPhone 14 Pro Max. superior.

And because the iPhone 14 Pro Max is equipped with a 6.7-inch screen and uses a stainless steel frame, it weighs 240g, which is 2g more than the previous generation; therefore, it still feels heavy to pick up. If compared with other phones, the weight of the iPhone 14 Pro Max is almost the same as the ROG Phone 6 Pro (239g), but the ROG Phone 6 Pro has a larger screen and battery capacity; if it is comparable to the 263g of Samsung’s folding screen phone Galaxy Z Fold 4 Not much worse than that, but it has two screens.

▲ The dark purple color of the iPhone 14 Pro Max is darker, and the purple component is not obvious, but it is a very textured color.

▲ Due to the larger photosensitive element, the lens and module size of the iPhone 14 Pro Max are larger.

▲ Both phones are made of stainless steel and use anodized treatment of the same color as the body; the thickness of the iPhone 14 Pro Max is 7.85mm, which is slightly thicker than the 7.65mm of the iPhone 13 Pro Max, but it’s not really visible to the naked eye.

▲ The positions of the mute button and volume button on the left side of the phone are roughly the same (the iPhone 14 Pro Max only moves up slightly by about 1mm), but the position of the SIM card slot is quite different.

▲ There is no difference at the bottom of the two machines, and the Lightning port is still used. (By the way, when will Apple switch to USB-C?)

The biggest difference between the other iPhone 14 Pro Max and the iPhone 13 Pro Max is the screen notch. The iPhone 13 Pro Max uses a narrower bangs, while the iPhone 14 Pro Max uses a capsule-shaped screen opening design. The front camera lens and the Face ID module are included, which also reduces their size; however, the opening is still very obtrusive, so Apple designed the “dynamic island” function for it, hoping to make the disadvantage a function. As for what can be played on the dynamic island, we will introduce it to you in a later article.

▲ By the way, the screen brightness of the iPhone 14 Pro Max can reach up to 2000 nits, and it can be seen clearly when used in the sun.

iPhone 14 Pro Max vs. iPhone 13 Pro Max performance comparison

Apple has used the new A16 Bionic processor on the two models of this generation of iPhone 14 Pro. This processor is built using TSMC’s 4nm process, and it is also said to use faster LPDDR5 memory. So, how much more power is the iPhone 14 Pro Max than the previous generation? We used some benchmark software to test, including AnTuTu, Geekbench 5, and 3DMark Wild Life Extreme.

First of all, in the AnTuTu section, the iPhone 14 Pro Max scored 907766 points (note that the iOS version cannot be compared with the Android version), while the iPhone 13 Pro Max scored 847557 points, which is about a 7% increase. Looking at the test details, the memory section has the largest improvement in running points (17.4%), followed by the user interface (8.1%), then the CPU (5.8%) and GPU (3.6%).

Summarizing the above test results, the performance of the iPhone 14 Pro Max compared to the iPhone 13 Pro Max can be said to have fully evolved:

  • AnTuTu’s total score increased by 7%
  • Geekbench 5 CPU up 8.3% (single-core), 12.7% (multi-core)
  • Geekbench 5 Compute up 5.8%
  • 3DMark Wild Life Extreme up 9.1%
  • 3DMark Wild Life Extreme Unlimited up 13.9%

With the more powerful A16 Bionic processor, how does the iPhone 14 Pro Max perform in the thermal control section? We use the 3DMark Wild Life Extreme Stress Test for stress testing. This link will run the Wild Life Extreme test 20 times in a row, and record the changes in each running score to see how the processor is affected by thermal stress.

As a result, the iPhone 14 Pro Max dropped from more than 3,300 points to more than 2,500 points in the first three tests, and finally dropped to more than 2,200 points, with a stability of only 65.3%; while the iPhone 13 Pro Max dropped from more than 3,200 points to more than 2,300 points in the first three tests. In the end, it dropped to more than 2000 points, and the stability was 64.3%, which means that the A16 bionic processor of the iPhone 14 Pro Max is slightly better than the A15 in terms of heat, or the iPhone 14 Pro Max has better heat dissipation; but in fact The stability of the performance is still a long way from the real e-sports mobile phone.

I don’t know what you think of the iPhone 14 Pro Max now? In terms of performance, the A16 processor is indeed an improvement compared to the A15, but it is probably about a 10% increase. In fact, there is not a big difference; if you are an iPhone 13 Pro Max user, unless you are 4800. I’m interested in a 10,000-pixel camera, otherwise it doesn’t really need an upgrade. However, for users of earlier iPhone models, you can consider upgrading.

We will have more test articles about the iPhone 14 Pro Max in the future, so stay tuned.
