(1) Protests in support of Palestine on American university campuses are becoming more and more intense. Conflicts occurred one after another on various campuses. For example, on April 18, nearly a hundred students supporting Palestine at Columbia University were arrested by the police, which caused great controversy. Columbia University has moved many courses on campus starting on April 22. online to avoid conflicts escalating again. At the University of Texas at Austin, there was also a physical conflict between students and police on April 24. At least 34 people are currently known to have been arrested, including reporters who were conducting interviews and reporting on the scene.

Similar solidarity demonstrations have spread across universities in the United States. Students participating in the activities have called on the United States to stop providing military aid to Israel, oppose corporate funding of schools by companies that support Israel, and support Palestinian war refugees. However, some Israeli or Jewish students pointed out that “anti-Semitic” hate speech and even intimidation and threats appeared in these demonstrations, which made some students feel uneasy. Regarding these statements, teachers and students from different schools responding to the activities responded that these extreme words and deeds were not the purpose of supporting the demonstrations, but may be the malicious sabotage of a very small number of people.

(2) The Myanmar military broke out in a coup to seize power in February 2021. Since then, Myanmar has been plunged into civil war for more than three years. In October 2023, the “Three Brothers Alliance” composed of Myanmar ethnic armed organizations launched Operation 1027 to attack multiple military strongholds. Although The power of the military government has weakened, but fighting between multiple parties continues, and sporadic conflicts with border areas of various countries also continue. In order to expand the source of troops, the military government implemented the latest People’s Army Service Law, which stipulates that men aged 18 to 35 and women aged 18 to 27 must serve for at least 2 years. The United Nations has described Myanmar’s civil war as a human rights disaster, and many Western countries have imposed economic sanctions on members of the junta.

In addition to thousands of middle-class people, there are also many young people who choose to enter the jungle to fight with ethnic armed groups. More than 300 armed organizations are distributed throughout the territory, and they need to fight with the Myanmar army at any time. Under the compulsory recruitment system of the government army, anxious young people believe that if they cannot escape abroad, they choose to take up arms and join the ranks of the rebels to regain their past free way of life.
