The osteoporosis screening model is especially suitable for young people who do not have osteoporosis risk factors. Through early screening, high-risk groups for osteoporosis can be detected and early interventional treatment, such as calcium supplementation, vitamin D3 or osteoporosis drugs, can prevent the occurrence of fractures.

AI interprets thoracic spine X-rays to accurately predict the risk of osteoporosis

Why can chest X-ray accurately predict groups at high risk of osteoporosis? Fang Wenhui explained that AI can further predict the bone density of the lumbar spine and hip joint from the ratio of bone and soft tissue in the thoracic spine image. However, if you have suffered from pneumonia or pulmonary hydration, the accuracy of the prediction may be reduced.

Fang Wenhui added that the current diagnosis of osteoporosis is still based on DXA examination, which has the advantage of low radiation dose. It costs about 700 or 800 yuan at one’s own expense, while a chest X-ray costs about 200 or 300 yuan, but the radiation dose is 10 times higher. Chest X-ray replaces DXA examination.
