(Central News Agency reporter Shen Peiyao, Taipei, 26th) In order to achieve the goal of eliminating tuberculosis by 2035, the Department of Disease Control and Prevention of the Ministry of Health and Welfare said today that in addition to promoting plans such as national mobilization to reduce tuberculosis by half in 10 years, it has recently invited five international prevention and control experts to conduct external evaluations. It affirms Taiwan’s prevention and control results and can serve as an international model.

Tuberculosis is one of the important infectious diseases in the world. The World Health Organization (WHO) continues the theme this year as Yes! We Can End TB aims to eliminate tuberculosis by 2035.

According to statistics from the Department of Disease Control and Prevention, Taiwan has implemented the “National Mobilization Plan to Reduce Tuberculosis (TB) by Half in Ten Years” since 2005. The incidence rate of new tuberculosis (TB) cases in 2023 is 28 cases per 100,000 population, which is higher than the incidence rate per 100,000 people in 2005. The population had 73 cases, a decrease of 62%.

The CDC issued a press release today stating that the Taiwan CDC External Review of the Ending Tuberculosis by 2035 Plan will be conducted for five days from April 22 to 26, and five international tuberculosis experts from Italy, Australia, Japan and the United States will be invited. Prevention and treatment experts all affirm the effectiveness of Taiwan’s tuberculosis prevention and control.

The CDC reported that an international expert team said that compared with previous external evaluations conducted in dozens of countries, Taiwan has almost no gaps in its tuberculosis prevention and control plans and implementation practices, and that all units from the central to local governments have implemented public health execution capabilities. The incidence of new tuberculosis cases has been steadily declining year by year. In particular, Taiwan has successfully integrated the public health and medical cooperation model (Public-Private Mix), which can serve as a model for prevention and control in other countries.

Coinciding with the international tuberculosis prevention and control event, the 9th Asia-Pacific Regional Conference of the International Alliance Against Tuberculosis (APRC Conference) was held in Taiwan from April 26 to 29. The Department of Disease Control and Prevention attended the meeting and organized a conference with the theme National TB Prevention and Control Program toward the Goal of TB Elimination meeting.

The CDC explained that in addition to introducing Taiwan’s tuberculosis prevention policies and prevention results, the meeting also invited international tuberculosis prevention and control experts to share the tuberculosis prevention and control strategies of Japan, Singapore, Indonesia and other countries. By participating in important international tuberculosis prevention and control conferences, they learned from international successful prevention and treatment experience and let the world see Taiwan’s prevention and control results.
