The 108-year-old Devlan Elementary School in Heping District, Taichung City, 800 meters above sea level, is located deep in the mountains, a 40-minute drive from the city. The nearly 100 students are mostly Atayal children. Due to the lack of resources in mountainous areas, many school buildings are damaged. Even the baseball team, which was formed only the year before last, can only use gloves and balls replaced by neighboring schools. After learning about it, the Farglory Cultural and Educational Charity Foundation (hereinafter referred to as the Foundation) chose to lead 18 corporate volunteers into the mountains on the eve of Children’s Day to carry out charity repairs. In addition to strengthening the safety of school buildings, the Foundation also sponsored baseball team bats and jerseys. equipment, the event also invited former Lotte Peach Monkeys infielder Yang Shengjun, who was titled “Taiwan Captain”, to share his experience with the young players and help them pursue their dreams.

Volunteers remove stagnant water from the playground and renovate the walls

Defulan Elementary School is located in a high mountain and is close to the Dajia River. Heavy rain and strong winds can easily bring small sand and gravel from the river bed. The sand and gravel accumulate on the brick paths of the playground, which not only makes students fall easily, but also increases the risk of wound infection. For the safety of students, this renovation focuses on strengthening the drainage of the playground and adding ditches on the brick paths to slow down sand and gravel sedimentation. The wall adjacent to the playground has many cracks due to thermal expansion and contraction over the years, and cement blocks on the wall are also prone to falling, causing danger. Farglory volunteers demolished the damaged walls and built new ones.

“Captain” Yang Shengjun painted exterior walls with young players and shared baseball strategies and techniques

Former professional baseball player Yang Shengjun was also invited to attend the event. He led the young players hand in hand to paint images representing the Atayal people on the outer wall of the dormitory. The young players couldn’t hide their excitement when they saw Yang Shengjun and raised various baseball professional questions. As a baseball college president, Yang Shengjun generously shared his experience. There was also a friendly baseball match at the scene. Yang Shengjun personally participated in the battle and led the young players to discuss strategies and provide guidance on hitting techniques. The young players gained a lot, and Yang Shengjun once again recalled his love for baseball. Yang Shengjun said: “It has been more than two years since I was released by the team after recovering from a brain tumor, but this has not made me give up baseball.
