Hualien earthquake continues. Meteorological Administration: Stress adjustment to the north with no obvious abnormalities to prevent aftershocks of magnitude 6 or above

--

After a magnitude 7.2 earthquake occurred in Hualien on April 3, aftershocks continued, and another aftershock of magnitude 6 or above occurred early this morning. The Central Meteorological Administration explained that these earthquakes are the aftershock sequence of the Hualien earthquake on April 3, and they are stress adjustments that release energy to the north.

The Meteorological Administration also stated that the aftershock sequence of the April 3 earthquake was not too abnormal compared with the past 921 earthquakes, and the possibility of subsequent aftershocks of magnitude 6 or above cannot be ruled out.

According to the earthquake report of the Central Meteorological Administration, a total of 15 significant felt earthquakes occurred from early morning to 9:6 a.m. today. Among them, a magnitude 6.1 earthquake occurred at 2:21 a.m., with the highest magnitude in Hualien, Yilan, Nantou, Taichung, Taoyuan, Hsinchu County, New Taipei City, Level 4, including Taipei City, New Taipei City, and 13 other counties and cities have national-level alerts. In addition, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake occurred at 2:49 and a magnitude 5 earthquake occurred at 3:13.

The Central Meteorological Administration held a press conference at 3:30 in the morning. Wu Jianfu, director of the Earthquake Prediction and Reporting Center, said that based on the location and depth of the earthquake,It is determined that these earthquakes are the aftershock sequence of the Hualien earthquake on April 3.Because the Hualien earthquake on April 3 was quite large, the earthquake sequence will undergo stress adjustment. The earthquake in the early morning released energy to the north..

Pu Xinjie, a researcher at the Earthquake Forecasting Center of the Central Meteorological Administration, told the media this morning that the Hualien area is an area of intense plate compression and collision. After the earthquake on April 3, the local structure was unstable, so there will be stress adjustment. The earthquake in the early morning, It occurred at a more northerly location in this aftershock sequence. Due to stress adjustment, it sometimes moved to the north and sometimes to the south.

Pu Xinjie also said that the possibility of the Hualien earthquake on April 3 triggering other earthquakes cannot be ruled out, because it may indeed disturb the surrounding areas, even from a distance.

According to statistics from the Meteorological Administration, as of 6 a.m. today, there have been a total of 1,303 aftershocks, 328 significantly felt aftershocks, and 975 small area aftershocks, including 5 aftershocks of magnitude 6 or above, and 63 aftershocks of magnitude 5 to 6.

Pu Xinjie said,The aftershock sequence of the April 3 earthquake is somewhat similar to the aftershock trend of the 921 earthquake. The number of earthquakes every day gradually decreases, but there will be an active aftershock period at some times. It is expected that the aftershocks will last for at least three to six months..

Pu Xinjie said that after a large-scale earthquake, the aftershocks will take a longer time. This is the same as 921. In terms of earthquake sequences, it is not too long yet. Compared with the 921 earthquake, this earthquake It won’t be too unusual. He gave an example. During the 921 earthquake, 10 aftershocks of magnitude 6 or above occurred within a week. By October of that year, aftershocks of magnitude 6 also occurred in Chiayi. Therefore, the possibility of magnitude 6 or above cannot be ruled out in the future.

As for why strong earthquakes occur at night? Pu Xinjie said that it was relatively coincidental. The main shock of the earthquake on April 3 was not at night but in the morning.

Pu Xinjie also explained why Shuangbei received a national-level warning this time, but not the earthquake on April 3. The main reason is that the scale of the earthquake on April 3 was relatively large. Generally speaking, the time band for obtaining earthquake source information will be relatively long. When evaluating the source parameters of the earthquake on April 3, the time period was not enough, so there would be some deviation in the estimate.
