U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced on the 26th that the United States will provide Ukraine with critical anti-aircraft ammunition and artillery shells as part of a $6 billion military aid package.
“This is the largest security assistance package we have ever committed to,” Austin said after a virtual meeting with dozens of Kyiv’s international supporters, the Guardian reported.
“They need anti-aircraft interception weapons, they need artillery systems and munitions. They need armored vehicles, they need maintenance and support. So all of that stuff is included in this package,” Austin said.
This new military aid program includes interception weapons such as the Patriot Missile System (Patriot) and the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS).
The package is the second aid announced this week. The United States immediately announced another $1 billion package after President Joe Biden signed a long-delayed bill providing new funding for Ukraine.
However, unlike the plan announced on the 24th, the new plan will be purchased from the defense industry, which means that these equipment will take longer to arrive on the battlefield.
